How to Constantly Improve Your Putting

The best putters in the world have perfected the approach to improving their putting, which allows them to give every putt the best chance of going in the hole. I believe this is a result of preparation, practice, and their mental approach. The good news is that you can learn to improve your putting using the same methods!

How can you improve your chances of making putts?

Here are my 5 easy steps:

  1. Decide where you are aiming before you setup over the ball. It’s critical to make up your mind because it keeps you decisive. Indecisiveness is the killer of positive decision making; it leads to fear, and poor results.
  2. Make practice strokes concentrating on feeling the distance to the hole with your arms. It is very important to make nice, smooth practice strokes with supple arms. The stiffer you feel over a putt the poorer you will putt. The softer your arms and stroke become, the more feel to will have for your putt.
  3. Tune your focus in to rolling the ball on the starting line you have chosen. Let this become a simple thought before you make your stroke, “All I have to focus on is starting this putt on line, and making a big enough stroke to get the ball to the hole. The rest will take care of itself.” This works really well because it helps you concentrate on the right things: focusing on the execution of the roll, not on the result of the putt.
  4. Make the best stroke you can and hold your finish. When you commit to holding your finish after the putt, it helps you make a better stroke.
  5. Force yourself to watch the ball roll to its destination. Do not concern yourself completely with the result. Gain feedback from your putt. Did it roll farther or shorter than you thought it would? Did it have more or less break than you saw? Choose to accept the current result but be sure to make the mental note of making the necessary adjustments for your next putt. This keeps you in a learning mind-set and helps you putt better and better as the round progresses.

These keys will help you constantly improve your putting!
